HISTORY ;;
Mathilda was born and raised on the small island of Chikao, one of the many small, idyllic islands surrounding the perimeter of the country of Megam. Her parents, both pious to a fault, tried from the time they were very young to instill a sense of strong religious conviction within their children. While her older brother and sister came out as upstanding, well-adjusted young people, Mathilda reacted unexpectedly ... strongly to the direction, and her parents found themselves changing their tune from bolstering her faith to trying to tone it down ever so slightly. Nevertheless, by this point, Mathilda was so fastened onto the ferocity of her beliefs, nothing could alter or shake them. And so, unsure what else to do about her, her family came to the desicion to simply allow her this fanatical, albeit harmless behaviour, and let her do what she wanted.
While Lindy and Jim enjoyed running through the ruins of old temples and the tropical forests of Chikao, Mathilda personally far preferred the more etertaining aspects of life. You know, things like laundry, sweeping, mopping, dusting, sewing, gardening, or basically anything that required hard work, or improved her surroundings. When she was 10, she went to work for a large orphanage on the island during the day, taking care of the smaller children and performing as many chores and she could get her hands on, and still keeping up her her chores during the evenings.
However, through all of this, one desire beat with a burning, bright passion in her heart, to serve the Dragon Gods in the very best way she could, as a Sister of the Church, and she mourned her sad misfortune that there was no convent on Chikao she could attend. Her parents, desperately upset at seeing her unhappy and unfulfilled, were nevertheless distraught at the idea of their little girl leaving Chikao [and slightly worried about how Mathilda would take to the scholarly pursuits of a convent], and they did their best to make their home a religious center to put any convent to shame ... but it was no use. Despite trying to keep up her happy, cheerful smile on at all times, Mathilda was lost and alone while not the sister she so deeply wanted to be.
Her parents finally relented, and Mathilda was sent to a convent on the nearby Papan island when she was halfway through her 14th year. There she became dear friends with the sisters Lillian [a smart little sweetheart with a serious problem making eye contact] and Raetha [a wild assertive tomboy who honoured a bizarre doctrine], immersed herself in prayers and chores, and failed horribly at every lesson she had.

PERSONALITY ;;
Mathilda is a happy, bubbly, cheerful young woman who loves nothing more than good, hard work -- except praying, of course. She is friendly to anyone, sweet and affectionate, and seems to have a permanent case of verbal diarhea. A chatterbox who would talk about anything for however long she can, she has a tendancy to scare people by talking their ears off.
She is not incredibly bright, having a hard time piecing basic common sense and logic together, and being downright incompetant when it comes to maths and letters. She laughs modestly and says she's quite aware that she's awful at books, but doesn't seem to see the problem with it. Her sheer lack of logic skills scares those around her.
Her faith is simple, cheerful, optimistic, and expressed once every three words. When a tropical storm misses the convent, she is thanking the Dragons. When wild animals don't run away with the laundry, she is thanking the Dragons. When she eats a particularly food piece of fruit, she is thanking the Dragons. When she goes a day without becoming sick, she is -- YOU GUESSED IT -- thanking the Dragons!
A person just like anyone else, Mathilda doesn't have only one emotion, she gets very offended by religious issues, and is easily hurt when she's hit with an insult direct enough that it goes through her natural defence of being quite dense, and if she thinks someone she cares about is being attacked, she fights for them tooth and nail. And thanks the Dragons endlessly when and if she wins. And frequently when she doesn't and just thinks she did.
While many find her impossibly annoying ... and with good reason ... most think she's sweet, although can't spend much time in her presence before making some excuse to get away she's not bright enough to figure out.

APPEARANCE ;;
Mathilda has shoulder-length, bouncy violet curls and bright eyes of the same colour. She looks younger than she is because of her childish innocence. She is slightly built, at 5'2", and usually wears a large bow in her hair. She dresses in the white gown of a sister, although occassionally she reverts back to her plain, sevicable navy peasant dress she wore before the beginning of her service. She's almost always smiling.
